American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) Scholarships

This foundation administers several scholarships to legally blind undergraduate or graduate students.  Each AFB scholarship has specific criteria. Be sure that completed application, includes all required supporting documents for each scholarship, and is received at AFB postmarked no later than specified date. The Scholarship Committee will review only those applications that comply with all requirements on the application form and meet the requirements for each scholarship.

 

American Library Association Scholarship

 

Committed to promoting and advancing the librarian profession, this scholarship program provides funding for study in a master's degree in library and information studies from an ALA accredited program, or for a master's degree in school library media program that meets the ALA curriculum guidelines for a National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) accredited unit.

 

American Psychological Association (APA) Scholarships and Fellowships

Several scholarship resources for psychology majors offered by the APA-- the largest association of psychologists worldwide with more than 150,000 members.

American Society For Microbiology (ASM) Robert D. Watkins Graduate Fellowship

Aimed at highly competitive minority graduate students who are enrolled in a Ph.D. program and who have completed their graduate course work in the microbiological sciences. The Watkins fellowship encourages students to continue and complete their research project in the microbiological sciences. The goal of the fellowship is to increase the number of underrepresented minorities completing doctoral degrees in the microbiological sciences.

Astronaut Scholarship Foundation

Former astronauts are helping the United States retain its world leadership in science and technology by providing scholarships for college students who exhibit motivation, imagination, and exceptional performance in the science or engineering field of their major.

The Atlanta Press Club Journalism Scholarship Award  Georgia!!

The Atlanta Press Club invites students to apply for four $1000 scholarship awards, to be awarded in the Spring of each year to outstanding Freshmen, Sophomore, or Junior students (or outstanding candidates from other levels of schooling) pursuing a career in journalism at a Georgia college and university. The $1000 scholarships are given to two print journalism students and two broadcast journalism students.

Ayn Rand Essay Scholarships

Opportunity for high school and college students to earn prizes and money by writing essay on a passage from an Ayn Rand novel.  Opportunity to hone those writing skills.

ChairScholars Foundation, Inc.

The student must be physically challenged but does not have to be in a wheelchair.  Must have serious financial difficulties--could not go to college without this financial aid!  Must have a history of satisfactory academic performance in the past.  At least a B+ average must be proven.  Must be a high school senior or college freshman. No graduate students can be considered.  The applicant must show some form of major community service or social contribution in the past.  The physical challenge must be "significant."  No minor disability will be considered. Must be under the age of 21. No one over 21 years of age will be considered.

Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation

This scholarship is open to all seniors in high school in the United States.  Each year 250 scholarships are awarded from a pool of more than 100,000 applicants. National Scholars receive $20,000 each, and Regional Scholars $4,000, over a period of four years. Coca-Cola Scholarships are awarded based on character, personal merit and commitment. Merit is demonstrated through leadership in school, civic and extracurricular activities, academic achievement, and motivation to serve and succeed.

Georgia Press Educational Foundation Scholarships  Georgia!!

 

The Georgia Press Educational Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit, tax exempt foundation which was established in 1963 to provide financial assistance to students studying journalism at colleges and universities throughout the state.  In addition to awarding scholarships to journalism college students, GPEF awards newspaper employees with scholarships to attend the Poynter Institute and the American Press Institute for advanced training.
 

Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC) Scholarships & Grants  Georgia!!

The Georgia Student Finance Commission is the agency responsible for administering student financial aid programs provided by the State of Georgia.  Administers a variety of scholarship and grant programs, including the HOPE Scholarship Program, Tuition Equalization Grant, Governor's Scholarship Program and more. Offers low-interest federal Stafford and PLUS loans to students and parents, and GSFC is the only lender in Georgia providing service-cancelable loans to encourage students to train for careers in critical need areas such as teaching and health care. Alternative loans and consolidated loans also are available to qualified borrowers.

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship

A $26,000 merit-based grant awarded to undergraduate students who wish financial support to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government.

Holocaust Remembrance Project

National essay contest for high school students designed to encourage and promote the study of the Holocaust. Scholarships and other prizes will be awarded to students in first, second and third place categories.  First Place winners will participate in an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and other historic sites.  In addition, scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded to the first-place national winners.

National Research Service Award (NRSA)Program

Awards training grants to institutions for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral training and individual NRSA fellowships to applicants who have completed their doctoral degrees. In addition, the Agency for Heath Research and Quality (AHRQ) supports dissertation grants for doctoral candidates. Minority candidates are strongly encouraged to apply for these fellowships and grants.

NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. Scholarships

Designed to increase the pool of highly trained civil rights lawyers and other professionals who defend the rights of the African-American community. Among the nation's leaders today, scholarship recipients have distinguished themselves in the health professions, business and industry, and in the public interest sector.
 

NCAA Sports Scholarships and Internships

Student athlete awards are given in all sports categories in amounts from $3,000 to $12,500. Awards are also available for sports related study such as Sports Journalism. Deadlines vary, as do the number of awards each year.

Presidential Freedom Scholarships

Students in every state in the nation as well as the District of Columbia have been recognized. Through the program, each high school in the country may select up to two students - juniors or seniors - to receive a $1,000 scholarship in recognition of outstanding leadership in service to their community. With funds appropriated by Congress, the Corporation for National and Community Service provides $500 for each scholarship, which must be matched with $500 secured by the participating school from the community.


Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA)Fellowship 

Designed to prepare students, primarily from historically underrepresented groups, for graduate studies in public and/or international affairs and groom them for professional roles in public service. Offers an array of opportunities spanning a period of development from the junior year of college to beyond the completion of a graduate degree.

Rhodes Scholarships at Oxford

Rhodes Scholars are elected for two years of study at the University of Oxford, with the possibility of renewal for a third year. All educational costs, such as matriculation, tuition, laboratory and certain other fees, are paid on the Scholar's behalf by the Rhodes Trustees. Each Scholar receives in addition a maintenance allowance adequate to meet necessary expenses for term-time and vacations. The Rhodes Trustees cover the necessary costs of travel to and from Oxford, and upon application, may approve additional grants for research purposes or study-related travel. The United States, with an annual authorization of 32 Rhodes Scholars, provides the largest of the national delegations, but the American contingent forms only a minority of the total.
 

The Roothbert Scholarship Fund

Open to all in the United States regardless of sex, age, color, nationality or religious background. While the Fund does not emphasize any particular form of religious practice or worship, it seeks to provide support to persons motivated by spiritual values. The Fund has awarded grants to persons entering a wide range of careers. However, preference will be given to those who can satisfy high scholastic requirements and are considering careers in education. Grants are small (averaging $2,000-$3,000) and are meant to be supplementary. Aid is given for the ensuing school year.

Its signature programs, the Siemens Westinghouse Competition in Math, Science & Technology and the Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement, reward exceptional achievement in science, math and technology.

Student Inventors Competition

New technology is emerging from colleges and universities across the United States and around the world. Students are often the force behind the breakthroughs. The Collegiate Inventors Competition's mission is to recognize and encourage students on their quest to change tomorrow.

ThinkQuest

An international website-building competition, sponsored by the Oracle Education Foundation. Teams of students and teachers are challenged to build websites on educational topics. These websites are published in the popular ThinkQuest Library and top-scoring teams win valuable prizes.

Tylenol® Scholars

Ten $10,000 scholarships and 150 $1,000 scholarships for higher education to students who demonstrate leadership in community activities and school activities and major or who intend to major in areas that will lead to careers in health-related fields, and are residents of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia.

United Parcel Service (UPS) Scholarships

UPS supports a wide range of scholarship programs to ensure students have the opportunity to pursue higher education. The UPS Foundation supports scholarships at all of the 665 independent colleges nationwide as well as several National Merit Scholars each year. In addition, the Foundation funds scholarships for the children of UPS employees.

United States Institute of Peace National Peace Essay Contest

The contest is open to all students in grades 9–12 attending high schools in the fifty states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Territories, and American citizens attending schools overseas. First-place state winners receive college scholarships of $1,000 and also compete for national awards of $10,000, $5,000, and $2,500 for first, second, and third place respectively. Students may take part in the contest with the sponsorship of any school, school club, youth group, community group, or religious organization. There must be a contest coordinator—someone in the school or community who can review essays and act as the key contact between participants and the Institute.

Walter Harrison Scholarship  Georgia!!

Each year the Walter Harrison Scholarship program awards $1,000 scholarships to high school seniors and undergraduate students attending any vocational school or two- or four-year accredited college or university in Georgia. More than $85,000 has been awarded since the program began. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement and financial need.

This website, formerly published in print form by the AFL-CIO as the AFL-CIO Guide to Union-Sponsored Scholarships, Awards and Student Financial Aid, describes more than $4 million in scholarships, with details about eligibility, application deadlines and contact information.
