This entertaining and educational site for kids, is loaded with fun, interactive stories, games, crafts, activities, and much more.  This website is designed for beginners and those parents who are willing to get them started early--designed for pre-Kindergarten the Grade 3.  Easy to navigate.

American Literary Classics  (Grades 5 thru 12+)
 
Features "A Chapter a Day" reading.  Makes reading these really wonderful American and English works a little less intimidating. 

 

Bartleby.com — Free Literary Resources  (Grades 5 thru 12+)

Internet publisher of literature, reference and verse providing students and researchers with free unlimited access to books and information on the web.

Big Books  (Grades K thru 5)

Contains a selection of colorful, online books with a focus on nature. Books such as The Swan Story use photos to show how swans hatch and develop in spring. Other titles include In the Autumn, Pond Web, Sebastian's Rhyme, and Sebastian's Waddle.

Common Errors in Engish    (Grades 6 thru 12+)
 
Paul Brians' tool is dedicated to errors in usage--not with grammar in general.  The site asserts it is concerned only with deviations from the standard use of English as judged by users such as professional writers, editors, teachers, literate executives and personnel officers. Good links to other helpful web resources. 

Crunch    (Grades K thru 12)   Writing!

The National Center of Educational Statisics CRUNCH is an online magazine encouraging student writers to fill its pages. CRUNCH accepts feature articles, art and technology reviews, and creative writing.

Duke University Writing Studio   (Grades 9 thru 12+)  Writing!

Duke University's Writing Studio is a resource designed to assist  the university's undergraduate and graduate students with improving their writing skills. But the site contains wonderful tutorials and handouts that can benefit students in any high school or college with improving their writing skills.

English Online Writer's Window    (Grades K thru 12)  Writing!

Writers' Window is a site for school aged young writers (aged from 5 to 18) to publish their writing. Writer's window will publish all writing that complies with their guidelines. Categories include short stories, poetry, research papers, and television, book and movie reviews. There are also continuous stories that young writers can add to.

Guide to Writing a Basic Essay    (Grades 7 thru 12+)

International Children's Library   (Grades Pre-K thru 8)

This library features books for 3 to 13 year olds  in their original languages.   A wonderful place to learn about the world.  This is a project of the University of Maryland and the Internet Archive.

KidSpace @ The Internet Public Library    (Grades K thru 12)

The Internet Public Library is a public service organization and a learning/teaching environment at the University of Michigan School of Information. In addition to KidSpace, the website features a TeenSpace section. 

Litrix Reading Room   (Grades 9 thru 12+)

All books are either out of copyright or the copyright holder has allowed free electronic distribution. That's the Litrix Reading Room provides books free of charge to readers.  Recommend parents screen books for appropriateness.

Free online dictionary and thesaurus and more.

Ms. Dowling's Virtual Classroom    (Grades 6 thru 8)

This site is the home of an actual classroom in Manassas, VA.  In addition to a variety of information on 7th grade Reading and Language Arts, the website also provides many links to other Reading and Language Art resources for young people of all ages. 

MSN Encarta

Access online encyclopedia, dictionary, maps and several other learning resources.  In addition, read great articles on education and learning.

MSN Kids – Read & Learn   (Grades K thru 8)

Features fun activities to help young kids develop reading and learning skills.  Website also features Fun for Older Kidz section.

Learn Spanish

A free online Spanish tutorial featuring pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, verb drills, travel helper and cultural notes curriculum.

The New Georgia Encyclopedia   (Grades 6 thru 12+)

Provides and authoritative source of information about people, places, events, institutions and many other topics related to the state of Georgia. 

NFB Kids: The Prince & I    (Grades K thru 12)

The National Film Board of Canada makes movies and they put-together mind-bending websites.  This is one of them.  Fun and educational place to visit.  Kids even get to try their hand at putting together a movie.

Oh! Kids    (Grades Pre-K thru 5)

Features learning and fun activities for several age groups: Webtots-- Children under six; Webkids--ages 7-9; and  Webtweens--ages 9 through 11. Also offers homework help resources.

Oswego High School Online Writing Guide    (Grades 8 thru 12)

Simple, clear, and concise website designed to help students construct research papers.

Poynter's High School Journalism Guide  (Grades 9 thru 12+)

A collection of essays and tips assembled by Doug White. Among the features: "Effective Editing," "An Ethics Checklist," "Succeeding in Broadcast," "Photojournalism Tips," "Creating Good Design," Writing the Editorial," and "Diversifying Your Coverage." Includes a Q&A in which the Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist talks about a humorous article he wrote for his high school newspaper about a drunken game called "Loadball."

Handouts and practice exercises for students aiming to improve their writing and grammar skills.  Although certainly targeting college students, this is an excellent development tool for high school students preparing for college.
